The Community of Celebration moved from Scotland to Aliquippa in 1985.

At that time, the town was devastated by the closure of its main source of employment, the local steel mill. Shops closed, properties were left to fall into disrepair, the economy of the town was permanently depressed and social problems including drugs abounded.
